Two honest reads of that table. First, the float: the RHS42 showed at $589 in one capture of Home Depot’s own category page and $549 in another taken weeks later — same SKU, same store. Big-box prices move; date-stamp any number you compare against, including ours. Second, the WiFi tax: $100–$140 over the identical-capacity RHS42 buys the app — low-salt alerts, continuous-flow warnings, remote regeneration. Useful, particularly the flow alert as a cheap leak canary; but note the app model is also the lowest-rated of the three (3.8 vs 4.0), which is the usual big-box pattern: the electronics people pay extra for are the part they most often review angrily.
The 1/3/10 warranty — and the asterisk
Here is the structure, stated identically on every Rheem product page: 1 year parts and labour · 3 years electronics · 10 years tanks. Tiered, specific, findable — everything the Aquasure page could not get from its subject in three attempts. And then the asterisk, in Rheem’s own words: the 1-year parts-and-labour coverage is “extendable to 5-years with the use of Rheem Cleaner” — which its maintenance guidance defines as every four months. Read that mechanism plainly: the headline warranty extension is conditional on a recurring purchase, roughly three bottles a year, for as long as you want the coverage alive. On most softeners, resin cleaner is ordinary optional upkeep — genuinely useful on chlorinated city water, skippable on clean feeds. On a Rheem it is also a warranty condition. That is not a scandal; it is printed openly, which already beats half this industry. But it changes what the bottle is: you are not just buying detergent, you are buying warranty-years — and a purchase like that deserves arithmetic, not vibes. Keep receipts either way: a conditional warranty without proof of the condition is theatre.
